At some point we can all do with some help to progress our business ambitions. To create the success we all crave that will enable us indulge our appetite and hence take great pleasure in discarding the can opener.
But do you need a coach or a mentor or a consultant?
Firstly it is important to understand the differences to enable you make the most appropriate choice for you and your business. A coach will help you improve, to develop and learn new skills. A coach will help you realise personal success and achieve your aims. Coaches commonly address attitudes, behaviours and knowledge as well as skills. It is not unusual for coaching to be an extended commitment.
A mentor will guide you through the development of your business. A mentor will use past experiences to help with consideration of alternative courses of action and help solve problems, leading to new insights and better business performance. A mentor will not provide answers nor tell you what to do. Only you can decide what actions to implement as it is your business and you who will have to live with the consequences. Mentoring isn’t about creating a dependency but could be a long term business relationship.
A consultant is typically an experienced professional who provides expert knowledge. A consultant works in an advisory capacity only and is usually not accountable for the outcome of a consulting exercise. A consultancy may only be a single event.
